I know it's officially spring when I pull out my Brazilian Bum Bum Cream from the depths of winter storage. Even though I can't just up and go on a two-week vacation to the Philippines, a big yellow tub of cream in hand makes me feel like summer is right around the corner.
I've always had a soft spot for exotic ingredients not always found in mainstream cosmetics, especially those from the tropics. When I was a kid, my mother gave me seaweed face masks, papaya soap massages, and virgin coconut oil treatments.
Unlike those sold in American drugstores, she insisted that these components were the key to effective beauty products. Not surprisingly, I've been a Sol de Janeiro customer for quite some time. Coco Cabana Cream (think coconut lotion meets water cream) was my first taste of the brand, but the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is where I truly fell in love.
Its primary components are supposedly responsible for the miraculous results. The antioxidant properties of aça and the circulatory-boosting effects of guaraná extract (which contains five times as much caffeine as coffee) work together to keep your skin healthy and feeling young and vibrant. Fatty acids, phytosterols, and polyphenols found in cupuaçu butter help to seal in moisture and boost skin elasticity, and coconut oil is, of course, a well-known and effective moisturizer.
While the name might lead you to believe that this cream is only for your butt, Sol de Janeiro notes that it can be used as a traditional body cream and will leave you looking and feeling better all over your body. And it might work because of all the positive feedback I read.
I could tell the difference even after just a few days of use. My bum was softer than ever in terms of hydration. The dryness, redness, and bumps on my normally dry skin had been significantly reduced after using the cream. In addition, those who don't like using body creams will appreciate how quickly it absorbs without leaving a greasy residue.
I didn't experience much of the promised smoothing/tightening effects, but my derriere was softer than ever, and it looked damn good in the mirror (so, I can't even begin to imagine how good it would look on the beach with a subtle tan—whew!).
The formula itself has a refreshing, tropical aroma. It has a sugary, almond-pistachio scent that takes you straight to the beach, rather than the more conventional coconut, banana, and sunscreen notes.
As you may have guessed, Bum Bum Cream is a drug to me. The creamy consistency, easy application, and enticing aroma are all huge pluses for me. The cream leaves my skin feeling soft, moisturized, and supple.
