She pioneered the "Gift With Purchase" marketing strategy at the outset of her business, which was adopted by competing cosmetics brands. Estée chose a light turquoise shade for the jars because she associated that hue with lavishness. She spent a week training the staff of a brand-new Estée Lauder boutique on how to best showcase and sell the company's products. Company operations relied heavily on referrals from satisfied customers.
